What is an ABC data sheet?
ABC stands for three things you write down together for every hard moment:
- A · Antecedent: what happened right before? Where was it, who was there? Was there a transition, crowds, noise, or was your child tired or hungry?
- B · Behavior: what exactly did you see and hear, and how long did it last?
- C · Consequence: what happened next, what did you or others do, and what helped?
Recording these three together, every time, helps you and your child’s school or therapist see what tends to trigger a hard moment, and what helps.
How to fill it in
- Write it down as soon as you can, at least the same day.
- Describe what you saw and heard: “threw the backpack on the floor”, not “was angry”.
- For the antecedent, look further back too: sleep, food, crowds, noise, a change in plans.
- Always note what helped. That is often the most useful part for school.
- Keep going for one to two weeks, including on good days.
- Bring the completed sheets to your meeting with school, the therapist or the IEP team.
Example
Tuesday 4:10 pm, grocery store
A Straight after school. Busy checkout, loud beep from the scanner.
B Hands over ears, lay down on the floor and screamed. About 10 minutes, severe.
C Left the cart, went to the car, headphones on. Calm after 10 minutes. Helped: quiet place, not talking for a while.
Wednesday 7:45 am, home
A Different clothes than usual: the familiar sweater was in the wash.
B Refused to get dressed, took the sweater off again, cried. 15 minutes, moderate.
C Chose together between two other shirts. Helped: offering a choice, extra time.
What to do with it
Bring the sheets to your meeting. Look together at which antecedents come up more often and what helped. An ABC data sheet does not diagnose anything; it gives you and the school or therapist a shared picture of what happens.
Rather use your phone?
A paper sheet is rarely at hand when you need it. With Vindra you capture a hard moment in one tap, even from the widget on your home screen. Add the antecedent, place and what helped later, and turn it into a PDF report for school or a therapist.

Vindra records only what you enter. It does not diagnose, gives no medical advice and does not detect patterns automatically: interpreting it stays with you and, if you like, a care provider.
